As Christians we have a hard time recognizing emotion. We tell our kids to have self-control, but having self-control doesn’t mean we can’t express emotion.
Following biblical examples of people who expressed their emotions freely before God like David and Paul, we can encourage our kids to express love and faithfulness to a friend who may be hurting, or to have courage to speak truth without flying off the handle. We can go to God and truly emote, have feelings and voice those to God, who can handle our emotions.
Good parents aren’t perfect. There’s no formula to follow, but there are ways you can grow every day. Focus on the Family’s 7 Traits of Effective Parenting Assessment gives parents an honest look at their unique strengths, plus some areas that could use a little help.
